The magic of playing percussion in a group, the joy of bringing a drum to life
That is the experience you will have in a course that we offer. You play a variety of drums, bells and shakers and along the way learn about (poly-)rhythms, technique, and ensemble-playing within a repertoire of traditional music from Africa, Brasil or the Middle East.
The percussion courses are for the recreational percussionist, but ambition is granted. You might go for a serial course or even audition to join the semi-professional sambistas of Sambacá.
The 15-week programs start twice every year and find a memorable apotheose in the WORLD PERCUSSION NIGHTS, a concert by all participants and the teachers. Afterwards a DJ takes over to turn the room into a dancehall (see our agenda for dates!).
The Percussion Institute is a collaboration between Drummers Initiative and CREA/University of Amsterdam. With our fifth season coming up, we have been very successful so far. Our courses Orientation, Brazilian/Samba and African/Djembe are always well booked. This is the reason we dare to come up with yet another exiting direction in percussion: Arabic/Darbuka.
