Arabic percussion / Darbuka

The darbuka is a goblet shaped hand drum of ancient origin that is used all throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean, in Arabic, Balkan, Jewish and Turkish music.

Played from Morocco right across to Pakistan, it can be heard in musical styles like Algerian raï, Egyptian el gil, Turkish folk and classical music as well as in albums of contemporary Western artists.

Our Darbuka lessons allow you to understand the essence of Middle Eastern rhythm and to learn how to play a percussion instrument that provides the rhythmic foundation for the hypnotic musical experience of the Middle East.

In a relaxed but instructive setting, you will become familiar with concepts like usul, pulse and odd meter, while you playing doums, teks, slaps and rolls on the darbuka to create an ensemble of entrancing musicality.
